A valley is the internal angle where two roof slopes meet and concentrate drainage into a narrow channel. Valleys handle two roof slopes’ worth of water, which makes them the most hydraulically-stressed part of a pitched roof, and they fail earlier than the surrounding covering.
Repair options range from clearing moss and resealing a sound lead valley, through replacing a rotten mortar-bedded valley with new lead or GRP, to rebuilding a valley where the underlayment has perished.

Why do valleys leak more than the rest of the roof?
All the water from two roof slopes concentrates into a narrow channel. Any debris, moss, ice build-up, or slight sag causes water to back up under the tiles either side, which creates a leak in winter rain or snowmelt.
Is a lead valley better than a GRP one?
Lead has a longer service life (80–100 years) if dressed properly, but GRP valley troughs are cheaper and faster to install and have a 30–40 year life. On a re-roof, lead is the traditional choice; on a budget repair, GRP is a legitimate option.
