Insurance claim survey in the UK

What the job involves
An insurance-claim roof survey is different from a standard repair quote. It has to be written in a format a loss adjuster can follow, with photographs of the damage, a full scope of works, materials specification, and a clearly stated methodology.
A good independent quote from a local roofer is often more valuable in a claim than a quote from the insurer’s panel contractor, because it gives you the independent price benchmark to push back against a low cash settlement offer.
What changes the price
- Complexity of the damage and whether a full survey is needed.
- Turnaround time (insurance work often has a 7–14 day deadline).
- Whether a site visit with the loss adjuster is included.
Timeline: Survey usually 1 day on site plus a few days for the written report.

Start my quote requestCommon questions
Should I accept the insurer’s panel contractor or get my own quote?
In most cases, get your own quote. Panel contractors are on volume tariffs with the insurer and may spec lower-grade materials; your independent quote forms the basis for a cash settlement negotiation. See the insurance claims guide for the full process.
Will the insurer pay for my independent quote?
Usually not directly, but most UK home insurance policies reimburse reasonable make-safe and diagnostic costs as part of the claim. Keep the invoice.
