Gutter replacement in the UK

Full PVC or aluminium gutter replacement — new brackets, new downpipes, new outlets.

Typical UK cost range

£15–£45/m²

National baseline. City-specific ranges are adjusted for local labour and access costs on the city pages below. See the full UK cost guide for the methodology and the factors that move a quote.

What the job involves

A gutter replacement removes the old gutter run, replaces the brackets (usually rotten or loose where the fascia has deteriorated), and installs new guttering and downpipes. PVC is the standard choice for most UK homes; aluminium is premium; cast iron is for period or listed properties.

A typical semi-detached house has 25–35 metres of guttering plus downpipes — a one to two day job.

What changes the price

  • Linear metres of guttering plus downpipe runs.
  • Material — PVC cheapest, aluminium mid, cast iron premium.
  • Access (ladder vs scaffold).
  • Whether the fascia behind also needs replacing at the same time.

Timeline: Usually 1–2 days for a standard semi.

Common questions

PVC or aluminium?

PVC is fine for 90% of UK homes, lasts 20–30 years, and is cheap to replace. Aluminium is worth paying for on exposed coastal or rural homes where the extra durability earns its keep. Cast iron is appropriate on listed buildings where the planning authority requires it.

Should I replace the fascia at the same time?

If the fascia is timber and showing any rot, yes — the brackets have to fix into something solid, and replacing guttering onto a failing fascia is false economy.
